What College Major Should I Take If I Want To Work With Animals? Not Veterinary Though?

I absolutely love animals, but if I don’t want to become a veterinary what type of college major should I pursue if I still want to work with animals?

It’s hard for me to tell what you mean by “love animals”. It might mean that you like to be around them. Or it might mean that you want to protect them. So please don’t be offended if part of my answer is not for you.
Comprehensive schools of agriculture, such at the University of California, Davis have programs on breeding new strains of farm animals. They have programs for various species: cattle, swine, etc. Of course these animals are bred to be slaughtered, so if this bothers you, you can move on to the next paragraph. Jobs in this field would include working in a research laboratory or helping ranchers with their breeding programs.
If you want to protect animals and do not need to have actual physical contact with the animals, you might look into wildlife conservation.
Many jobs working with animals do not require a college degree. Examples would be training dogs for security and detective work or to guide the blind, breeding dogs or cats for sale, or grooming dogs and cats.
I hope this gives you some ideas.

Marine biology if you are interested in the ocean. You could also look into your local junior/community college and see if they have training on pet care and grooming, or dog training. What about being a vet’s assistant or a zoo keeper? if so, major in biology and concentrate on zoology or ecology. Have fun!

It sounds like the sciences would be a good home for you. From there, you can specialize in an array of things. For instance, do you love ecology? That could be a great major. Marine biology? Again, another fabulous major. You can study Zoology too. Try to figure out specifically what you want to do with animals (what line of work or passion… where can you see yourself spending hours and hours of your time). Once you find that, work backwards and figure out how to achieve it. Eventually, you’ll find your major.
I did a few searches on elefoo for science institutions and institutions with the word ‘animal’ in them. Find a good institution that is very relevant, and then look at the programs they offer. This is incredibly insightful and will help you quite a lot. Best of luck!
